DescriptionAmida studied Foundation in Art and Design at Camberwell College of Arts. She says: 'This oil painting on panel was inspired by one of the ending scenes of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. It is a riot scene and I chose to look at this particular scene because I believed it was one of the most powerful frames within that film as it is relevant today. I decided to use myself and my brother, Abdulaziz, as replacements for the sibling protagonists, Mookie and Jade, so that there is a more personal connection to this painting. I decided to entitle it Calm During the Storm because the sibling protagonists appear to be calm and still, which could also be perceived as what appears to be shock, as if they are still trying to process what has just happened (the murder of radio Raheem), whilst a riot breaks out and police brutality continues to occur around them'.
