DescriptionThis mask collection was inspired by the uplifting impact that living in an optimistic, brightly coloured, carnivalesque atmosphere and upbeat neighborhood had on me. I was interested in the suppressing effect on my emotions and poor mental state that I noticed after I moved to Portobello Road from Caledonian Road as a foreigner.
This project is designed to combine the optimistic, bohemian atmosphere of Portobello Road and identifying the physical and emotional health problems that living in these different areas of London had on me. As part of my research I looked in to the growing
problem of airborne pollutants, particularly in the form of ‘fine-dust’ which has become a serious issue in South Korea over the past decade.
The goal of this project is to reduce the environmental impact of wearing a face mask and minimising the ‘disposable’ aspect of its use, utilising more eco-friendly materials, using my own hand-dyed yarns such as silk, cotton, and wool. I also used natural moss to replace the use of artificial, non-biodegradable materials.
