Marx’s Pattern Paper, 1987

Text by the designer:
During her career, Marx was vocal about the pay inequality between men and women designers. My work refers to the pay gap and uneven representation that exists within the graphic design industry today. The pattern style is inspired by Marx’s block printed papers, as well as the moquette textiles she designed for London Transport underground seats in the 30s and 40s. The red cross, if pay had been equal, would align and the pattern would reach symmetry, but as women are paid less than men, the lines are skewed. Additionally, the fact that women still only make up 33% of the work force does not correspond to the amount of women in graphic design education.
