DescriptionPosters designed for the CSM Museum & Study Collection exhibition 'I Don't Know Her Name But I Know Her Work' 2017/18. Created in response to the ‘Royal Tournament’ Underground poster by Margaret Calkin James, 1932
Text by the designer
Inspired by Calkin James’s Royal Tournament
poster, I wanted to explore her signature use
of repeat patterns – commonly of people – and
her use of layering. I was interested in how this
technique could be applied using other mediums,
in particular, photography. The figures in the
‘Royal Tournament’ poster have a great sense of
movement. I wanted to make sure my work also
conveyed this by photographing people in motion
and using dynamic layouts to emphasise this, while
also exploring a more satirical view of modern
London.
