DescriptionDuring this period, only male actors were allowed on stage by the Tokugawa Shogunate, so female roles were also played by men. Iwai Hanshiro (岩井半四郎) was famous as a tachiyaku (an actor who plays the role of a normal adult male in kabuki), however he plays a female role in this print.
