Japanese colour woodblock print showing two men with writing implements

Ichikawa Omezo (市川男女蔵)

Date: c.1830
Medium: O-ban Nishiki-e (大判錦絵, large-format coloured print)
Object number: O.29
DescriptionThe figure in the front, smoking a kiseru (煙管) and wearing a black haori (羽織, a Japanese cloak), is the popular actor Ichikawa Omezo (市川男女蔵). The person behind him has no details. However, the figure depicted in Kakejiku (掛け軸, a hanging scroll) at the back of the room is probably a predecessor, as he is wearing a haori with the same Ichikawa family crest, 'Mimasumon (三升紋).'
