A scene beside a tavern ("La Sabot Royal") on the coast of France with a group of soldiers preparing to set sail for England; a soldier is roasting frogs over a fire on the blade of his sword and a monk is feeling the edge of an axe which he is putting on to a horse-drawn sledge laden with instruments of torture, a figure of St Antony and a plan for a monastery.
