Bhagavata Purana

Date: late 18th century
Dimensions:
163 x 385 mm (16.3 x 38.5 cm)
Object number: F.21
DescriptionManuscript fragment, the two folios are from a Sanskrit pothi format manuscript of the Bhagavata Purana. Blocks of black and red handwritten script enclosed within gold borders. Illuminations of spray of red and gold flowers with green and gold leaves at each end of page
The text verses, here in the middle frame, are accompanied by a commentary in the upper and lower frame.
They are number 6 to 10 (respectively 6-7 and 8-10) of chapter 29 from the tenth Canto (or book) that tells the stories of Krishna’s childhood and youth.
The two fine miniatures illustrate the episode described in the text of the gopis who hearing the sound of Krishna’s flute leave behind their families and homes to be with Him.
In the first one (F.21.1) they are seen leaving the houses after interrupting their daily activities, in the second (F.21.2) they are depicted with their fathers, husbands and brothers who are trying in vain to stop them.
Probably dated late 18th century and created in the Indian state of Rajasthan (specifically Jaipur).
The shortened figures and painterly approach are similar to other works held in the British Library’s collection. see another Sanskrit manuscript from the same period:
