DescriptionDog Eater Brooch by Si Xing (Season Cheng)
In 2013 there was a “Make me Asian” app available on Google Play, where users could slant their eyes, wear a rice hat, and colour their faces yellow. This is one of the most typical portrayals of East Asians in the last century. Also, the Cantonese accent has always been everyone’s favourite when it comes to imitating Chinese people speaking other languages. Therefore I have decided to add that element into the design as well.
This piece acts as a visualisation of the concept of “labelling”. I aimed at identifying various stereotypes in my collection. In this particular one, the main focus is on the “yellowface” stereotype. I mimicked the Dos and Don’ts on a laundry label to satire the “typical” Chinese under the media’s depiction.
