DescriptionChildren playing with shadow plays. The children in the foreground are using Soumatoh (走馬灯, a running lantern). Soumatoh is a lantern from China, designed so that shadow puppets rotate. They were imported to Japan in the Edo period and were a popular summer evening pastime.
