DescriptionScenes from a play titled 'Azuma Kudari Goju-san Tsugi (吾嬬下五十三駅, The capital (Kyoto) from the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido highway),' performed at the Kawarazaki theatre (河原崎座) from the 4th day of the 8th month, 1854.

This scene is explained as Gojusan-tsugi no uchi Kanaya Shimada no aida Oigawa (五十三駅のうち金谷島田の間大井川, The Oi River between Kanaya and Shimada from The Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido highway). The Oigawa River was known for its rapids and for political reasons bridges could not be built, so people had to be guided across the river by a leader.
The ghost might be of someone who lost their life in the rapids.

The Author is Kawatake Mokuami (河竹黙阿弥).
