DescriptionMaryam studied MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts. She says:
'My work has always been about representation, revolving around the society that I come from - I come from Pakistan an Islamic society. My main agenda has been about the misrepresentation of women in our society.'
Curatorial notes tell us that, moving to London in 2004, she became interested in the transference of newspapers between strangers on the tube. She began picking up abandoned papers and painting over images of British celebrities in the style of Pakistani publications, putting the stars in traditional Islamic garb.
