DescriptionOne of a series of posters commissioned from the Central School of Arts and Crafts by London Underground. A prolific designer, calligrapher and artist, Calkin James was in the vanguard of British female designers between the wars. From the 1930s she made lino-cuts for printed textiles. The repeating patterns of printed textiles are reflected in her ordering of the cavalry in this poster.
