Nuremburg Chronicle [page 215]

Date: c.1493
Medium: Black printing ink on laid paper
Object number: P.45.6
DescriptionPage 'CCXV' or 215 from the Chronicle. Page number in top right corner of recto. There are three half-length portrait illustrations on the recto including a Saint and two Kings. The Saint is 'S.Thomas de Aquino Doctor'; the Kings are 'Carolus Rex' and 'Philipus Rex'. (In the adjacent text a major initial P is missing and had obviously been missed by the compositor.) There is also a small woodcut illustration of a scene, the subject of which, according to it's title, is 'Flagellation'. The related text is concerned with penitence rituals popular in 'Alemaniam' (Germany) and 'Gallia' (France). The verso features three half-length portraits of the Popes 'Gregorius Decimus', 'Innocentius Qntus' and 'Adrianus Quintus'. A woodcut of a religious council is also featured. Such prints can be found throughout the Chronicle and usually feature similar groups of Bishops, Archbishops, Cardinals and the Pope (?). These religious councils took seats in larger cathedral towns or cities; this council is the 'Concilium Lugdunese', the religious council for the town of 'Lugdune'.
