DescriptionThe story is based on a scene from the very popular bestseller novel ‘Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji (偐紫田舎源氏),' written by the popular novelist Ryutei Tanehiko (柳亭種彦) and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (歌川国貞).
In this story, the author changed the setting from the Heian period to the Muromachi period. The protagonist Hikaru Genji (光源氏) was changed to a character called Ashikaga Toshimitsu (足利利光), and the story centred on his relationships with various females. The novel was banned in 1842, but was so popular that prints related to this novel were issued.
