The plot is based on the actual scandal called 'Shirakoya Incident (白子屋事件).'

The incident became a scandal throughout Edo, giving rise to various creations with characters whose names are reminiscent of those involved in the incident. Shirakoya Okuma (白子屋お熊), was born as the daughter of a lumber wholesaler Shirakoya in Edo, Okuma was executed in 1727 at the age of 23 ( according to some theories, 21) for plotting to poison her husband with her mother and mistress.

In this play, Okoma (お駒) implies this female, Okuma.
