[Manuscript illumination: Initials]
Collection:CSM Museum & Study Collection
Date: early - mid 13th century
Medium: Paint, gold leaf on parchment
Object number: F.35.1-9
DescriptionNine small inhabited, illuminated capitals - (inhabited by humans and a flower). These are Major initials, used to illuminate a smaller text, possibly a Bible, which (due to the scale) would have probably been made for personal use. It is unclear as to whether this was made by a Monastery or a workshop; such texts would have been made by both for either clerical use or lay use (for personal devotion). This is a fine example of highly skilled craftsmanship, particularly when the scale is taken into consideration.
